The Grind

While we haven’t always relied on the generousity of strangers, we do appreciate it when it comes along.  So when when Blair’s cousin mentioned that her significant other, Curtis, could get us jobs we jumped at the opportunity.  Colette managed to hold her job for three days, Blair lasted a mere twenty-four hours.  The jobs were for restaurant servers and we decided that our souls were worth more than the paltry fee that we were being paid.  All too often you run across the management style that the only solution to the problem is to assign more labor to it.  In some instances this might be appropriate, but not in a profession where the more people you have means the less money everyone makes.  In restaurants the usual wage for servers is $2-3 an hour the rest is made up through tips.  So from a management point of veiw an extra two or three people on the floor means very little cost.  The problem with this is that you have lots of people standing around looking bored, which is a poor image; and you can only keep the kinds of people that can’t get jobs making more money.  In short, you have lots of incompetent people leaning on stuff.  So we parted ways.

It is hard to watch your bank account dwindle with very little going back into it, but it is even harder to get a job when you still have a bank account to speak of.  We don’t need the money so we find it hard to work for something that we don’t believe in.  It is humourous how quickly one can believe in something when you don’t have any money.
